Freshwater fishing in Anglesey |
Anglesey as a venue for freshwater fishing has in the past perhaps been somewhat overshadowed by the large natural lakes and the sea trout and slamon rivers in Snowdonia. However, the discerning angler has always appreciated the range and quality of angling to be found on the island, and with the development of new fisheries, particularly Llyn Alaw and Llyn Cefni for trout and also new coarse fisheries, Anglesey is now widely regarded as an important venue.
Anglesey offers the angler a wide range of sport, set against the awe-inspiring backdrop of the Snowdonia mountains. The freshwater angler has the choice of both game and coarse fishing, mainly in still waters but with some opportunities in the streams and small rivers. The wild, maritime climate and relatively fertile soilstogether with areas of limestone mean that the conditions for fish growth are good
There are some 25 lakes and pools on the island, but a few are not readily available to the visiting angler, as they are privately fished, have become overgrown, or are on nature reserves. However, more than compensating for this, there have been major increases in fishing waters, particularly the addition of over 900 acres of trout fishery in the form of Llyn Alaw and Llyn Cefni, reservoirs built in the 1950s and 1960s, and more recently the development of new coarse fisheries at and Cwm Reservoir .
