LLYN ALAW – LLYNNON MILL
Turn left out of the main entrance to
Llyn Alaw
and walk down the road. Just before the bridge over the river Alaw, turn right up into a field and follow the field boundaries to
Glan Alaw
farm. Proceed down the farm track to the road. About halfway down the road on the left is ‘
Bedd Branwen’
or ‘
Branwen’s Grave’
; a burial mound dating back to 2000BC, best known by its literary association with Branwen from the Mabinogion. There is no public access to this site. When you reach the lane turn left, into the village of
Elim
. Turn right, then head down a track to
Marian farm
. Proceed around the back of the farm, diagonally across the fields, to come out on a lane. Turn right, go straight across the x-roads and up the lane to
Llynnon mill
. For a shorter walk, after Llynnon mill go back across the x-roads and follow the lane to
Howell Water mill
on your left. Then follow directions

LLYNNON MILL – HOWELL MILL
Turn left out of
Llynnon mill
, and turn right shorlty, onto a public footpath. Follow this path across the field and through the woodland to a lane. Turn left, then right, down a farm track. Follow the track to the end, pass over the stile, through the fields crossing the streams, up the hill to come out on a lane. Cross the road and go straight into the next field, past the trig point, then bear left down a field to a gate and track. You will come out on a lane. Turn left, then right at the T-junction by the chapel, then left down another lane. Shortly bear left onto a track, past
Tre-moelgoch Mawr
and
Tre-Moelgoch Bach
and over the
river Alaw
once again (pass under pylons). Bear right up over the hill, passing a disused farm. Go through the gateway and up the fields to the church of
St. Gafran, St. Ieuan
and
St. Sannan
. The church is owned by a charity called ‘Friends of Friendless Churches’ and dates from the 14
th
century. Walk around the church, up the track and across the field to a lane. Turn left to
Howell mill,
on the right.
HOWELL MILL – LLYN ALAW
Turn left out of
Howell mill
, then left again off the lane onto a footpath to walk past the mill pond used to power the mill. Turn left along the road, then right, next to
Henbont farm
before the bridge. Bear left up the hill, over the stiles and cross a drainage ditch. Proceed up the hill following the field boundary on your left to a large farm. Pass the farm and join an access track through a field to a road. Turn left, along the road then turn right just before the bridge up past
Bodnolwyn Wen
farm. After the farm follow the grassy track down towards the lake. Turn left on the road to the car park.
