Community Enterprises
The economic viability of rural communities is increasingly under threat, as is the accessibility of local services. The voluntary sector has a substantial role to play in those communities which have a strong collective will to reverse the process and improve local facilities.

A community enterprise is defined as a business which is established in a community or geographical area in order to create enterprise in that area, or as a partnership of businesse brought together to effect an economic development project. Activities in the community suitable for community enterprise progression can vary from biomass production schemes to home help services. Common to all is the potential for employment creation and the mechanism for a greater degree of self-determination.

Menter Môn has played a central role in the development of a number of such initiatives:

Trigolion Llanddaniel Fab   Trigolion Llanddaniel Fab
Yn fuan ym 1995 fe gollodd Llanddaniel ei siop a'i Swyddfa Post. Trwy hynny tynnwyd calon masnachol y pentef ymaith ac fe adawyd Llanddaniel yn pentref annedd yn unig.

Yng Ngwanwyn y flwyddyn honno galwyd Menter Mon i gyfarfod cyhoeddus y pentref, pryd benderfynodd100 o drigolion y pentref i ffurfio cwmni ac i godi arian drwy aelodaeth er mwyn prynnu eiddo yn y pentref ac ail agor Siop a Phost. Drwy godi £15,000 daeth Trigolion Llandaniel Cyf yn gymwys i gael grant o £35,000 gan Menter Mon i brynu'r Hen Efail, ei addasu, ac yna ei osod er mwyn i denant lleolei redeg fel 'Siop yr Efail' Llanddaniel.

Daeth bron pob aelod o'r cwmni allan i dystio i'r lansiad swyddogol, ynghyd a thyrfa fawr o bobol y pentref, a chorau plant yn canu mewn digwyddiad calonogol a llwyddianus iawn.

Creuwyd dau swydd drwy gyfrwng y prosiect ac mae pobol Llanddaniel yn gwneud defnyddda o'r siop newydd hyd yma.

  The closure of the post office at Llanddaniel resulted in the conversion of the building into a home, leaving no building suitable for housing a relaunched post office. The local community was committed to the concept of a local village shop/post office, and therefore established the Trigolion Llanddaniel Fab Cooperative to take this idea forward.

The cooperative located a suitable old property in the village (the Old Smithy), and set about raising £15,000 via public subscription, which was achieved over a period of 14 months. The building was bought and renovated, and has been successfully operating as Siop yr Efail for about a year, with a tenant appointed to run the business, and the rental income used by the cooperative to maintain the property.

This project has fulfilled a number of aims:

  • it has improved the local environment by renovating an eyesore in the centre of the village;
  • it has restored commercial vitality in a village that has no shop and few services;
  • it has brought a vital community resource into community ownership;
  • it has created 2 jobs;
  • it has demonstrated that with motivation local people can bring about specific economic impacts.

Cwmni Cemaes Cyf
Cemaes is one of the most northerly villages in Anglesey, and the community there decided to seek to improve the local economy by encouraging more people to come and spend time in the village. Apart from the international Celtic Festival of Music is planned for this summer, Cwmni Cemaes has established a new heritage centre and published a booklet about the local area.
