| Road Verge Flowers | Blodau | |
|
Until not so many years ago our meadows were rich in wild flowers. Sadly, modern agricultural techniques have resulted in the great majority of these being lost over the last 20 years. One of the few places where we can still see how our flower rich meadows might once have looked is along the road verges of the island. Being highly visible they also play an important part in forming impressions of Ynys Môn to people visiting the island for the first time.
A number of road verges on Ynys Môn have been identified by the North Wales Wildlife Trust as being of special botanical interest - some having remarkable displays of orchids, including some quite rare species. In order to maintain the diversity of flowers, the verges require special management that goes beyond normal highways maintenance programmes. The verges require cutting at particular times of the year, and there is also a need to remove the cuttings from the site (mimicking the natural process of grazing). If the is not done, the cuttings rot down and soil enrichment follows leading to a change in the flowers from rich meadow flora to uninteresting grassland with few flowers. Menter Môn have supported the North Wales Wildlife Trust in a programme of verge management in order to maintain these displays for future generations to enjoy.
