Otters return to Anglesey   Dyfrgwn yn ôl ym Môn
After an absence of nearly 2 decades otters have returned to the rivers and lakes of Ynys Môn. From the 1950's the otter disappeared from much of the British Isles due to pesticide pollution, habitat loss and land drainage. Since then the pollution problem has eased, allowing the animal to begin a recovery.

Menter Môn, with support from the Countryside Council for Wales and the Environment Agency, commissioned otter expert and Anglesey resident Robert Greig to survey the rivers Cefni, Braint and Crigyll and associated lakes. We were delighted to find evidence of regular use by otters on all the rivers and lakes that Robert looked at. We are now working to secure its permanent re-establishment.

Although the pollution problem has eased, suitable riverbank habitat is still a problem on the Island and may prevent otters settling in permanently. So we have established a network of 'holts' at undisturbed locations. These specially constructed riverbank caves will allow the otters to breed in peace, and will help secure their future here. As the population thrives we very much hope that there will be opportunities for the public to observe these splendid creatures in their natural habitat.

During the day, otters will lay up wherever they can find suitable cover along the river bank - scrub or dense vegetation. So we would very much like to hear from anyone on Ynys Môn who might be prepared to set aside a strip of riverside or lakeside land. Otters will use quite small streams - for feeding then for travelling about the island - and so it is not necessary for land to front onto one of the larger rivers.

Wedi absenoldeb o ugain mlynedd mae dyfrgwn wedi dychwelyd i afonydd a llynnoedd Môn. O’r 50au ymlaen diflannodd ein dyfrgwn o rannau helaeth o Brydain oherwydd effaith llygredd plaladdwyr, colled cynefin a thraeniad tir. Ers hynny gwelwyd gwelliant yn y sefyllfa llygredd, gan ganiatau adferiad yn sefyllfa’r dyfrgi.

Mae Menter Môn gyda chefnogaeth y Cyngor Cefn Gwlad ac Asiantaeth yr Amgylchedd wedi comisiynu’r arbennigwr dyfrgwn Robert Grieg, sy’n byw ym Môn, i archwilio afonydd Cefni, Braint a Chrigyll, a’r llynnoedd perthnasol. Braf oedd darganfyddu tystiolaeth o ddefnydd cyson gan ddyfrgwn ar bob un afon a llyn roedd Robert yn edrych ar. Rydym ni nawr yn gweithio ei sicrhau ei ail-sefydliad parhaol.

Er i’r llygredd wella, mae diffyg cynefin addas yn parhau’n broblem ar yr ynys ac efallai yn rhwystro dyfrgwn rhag setlo’n barhaol. Rydym felly wedi sefydlu rhwydwaith o ‘holts’ mewn lleoliadau anhygyrch. Mae holt yn rhoi cyfle tanddearol i’r dyfrgi fridio, ac yn cynyddu’r tebygolrwydd o berswadio’r dyfrgi i setlo yma ym Môn. Gyda cynnydd mewn poblogaeth, gobeithir y ceir gyfle i’r cyhoedd arsylwi’r creaduriaid arbennig yma yn eu cynefin.

Yn ystod y dydd mae’r dyfrgi yn cilio lle bynnag y ceir loches ar hyd glannau’r afon. Hoffem glywed gan unrhyw tirberchenog ym Môn fyddai’n fodlon diogelu stribed o lan afon neu lyn i’r pwrpas o lochesu’r dyfrgi a chreu cynefin iddo. Defnyddia’r dyfrgi nentydd bychain – nid oes angen afon fawr i’r pwrpas. Cysylltwch â ni os oes gennych ddiddordeb.
