Ozone was first discovered in 1840 by Christian Frederic Schonbein, who noticed a unique odour during electrical sparking and electrolysis experiments. He named the substance from the Greek word ozein , meaning "to smell".

It is this property that is of greatest benefit, and drives the development of ozone generators.
