Inthe modern world, with high unemployment and ever-changingemployment requirements, the J.E. O'Toole Centre has been anessential and much welcomed asset for the local community.

Originallyopened in the depression of the 1930's and more recentlyrefurbished to meet the community's needs leading up to themillennium, the Centre has a proven record for providing leisureand learning opportunities for the unemployed.

Theobjective of the centre is to provide a focal point wherebyindividuals can come together in a range of social andeducational activities not otherwise available to them. The roleof the Activities Officer, employed at the Centre, is to identifythe training and educational requirements of the employer andpotential employees, and to make available, where possible, thecourses and training necessary to meet those needs.

Currentactivities include: Computer Studies; C.L.A.I.T (Basic);Integrated Business Technology (Intermediate); InformationTechnology (via the Welsh language); NVQ in Caring; Foundation inthe Visual Arts; Book-keeping (Pitmans) levels 1 and 2; Numeracyand Literacy; Welsh; University of the Third Age; Photography.The classes are varied and are subject to change throughout theyear.

Thecentre also provides services: Job application/Curriculum Vitaescheme; Landlords list; Bond deposit provision; Leisure CentreCards (reduced entry cost); Free food distribution; Computeraccess; Nappy changing facilities for babies and full access forthe disabled.

Whilstthe centre recognises the need to provide access and facilitiesfor training and educational purposes, it also provides premisesand time for other needs in the community including Mind (specialneeds), deaf awareness and lip-reading, parents and toddlers aswell as providing facilities for other agencies. A pioneeringproject has just commenced whereby the centre is promoting healthand fitness at the Amlwch Leisure Centre via its Sports CardScheme.
