Bara Brith is traditionallyregarded as the national loaf of Wales. Translated, the namemeans "speckled bread", a reflection of its appearancedue to the large quantities of fruit contained in the loaf.

The loaf produced by Gwynle Bakeryis possibly the finest example of this speciality bread producedin Wales today. Made to a recipe that has been in my family for 3generations or more, this richly-fruited, delicately-flavouredloaf contains no artificial ingredients. It is loaded from top tobottom with currants, sultanas, cherries, walnuts and citrusfruit peel. It is delicately flavoured with spice and a secret, though natural, ingredient.

In fact, the addition of cherrieswas a refinement made by myself in the mid 1970s. A special BaraBrith was formulated to celebrate the Triple of Triple Crowns (YGoron Driphlyg), achieved by the then fabulous Welsh rugby team.By popular demand, the cherries have been retained as anessential ingredient in this fine traditional product.
