Holyhead and District Citizens Advice Bureau. Following the opening of the new offices in Llangefni in October the CAB are holding an Open Day on Tuesday 1 December 1998 between 10am-2pm. At present the office is open for appointments and telephone enquiries on Wednesday 10-2 and an open door system operates on Thursday 10-2. The CAB are hoping to recruit new volunteers so that the office can open every day of the week. The office has been very busy since the opening and a wide variety of problems have been dealt with by staff transferred from the Holyhead office. For more information contact Gareth Rowlands . As well as advising clients, CABs also lobby for change on issues and/or legislation which are causing many of their clients distress. This month their most common problem has been about the treatment of clients by the gas companies, considerable unnecessary distress has been caused to customers. Many elderly people who have never been in debt in their lives have received huge bills. The problem exists because gas companies are encouraging British Gas customers to change suppliers but then British Gas are sending out estimated final meter reading quite out of proportion to normal usage. British Gas have very little regard for their lost customers. The new companies have shown that they are not prepared for the changeover and if customers want to change back, which is their right, they find they are being ignored by all parties. Without the CAB negot-iating, phoning and writing on their behalf many more customers would be receiving letters from the debt collection agency. If you have any queries on this subject or any other issue please get in touch with the CAB either in person or by phoning: Holyhead - Llangefni - Llanfaelog - or Amlwch - , during CAB opening hours. An Invitation to Contribute The Crime and Disorder Act 1998 places a statutory duty on Chief Officers of the police and Local authorities to work together to develop and act on a strategy to reduce crime and disorder. The strategy must be on an Unitary authority area, such as the Isle of Anglesey. In addition to the above the Act places a statutory responsibility on the police, probation service and health authority whose area lies in the strategy area to co-operate fully Additionally, it gives the Secretary of State the powers to denote other bodies or agencies that the responsible authority must invite to take part in the process. Before forming the strategy the police and local authority must jointly carry out an audit of local crime and disorder problems and consult widely with the local community and other key partners; prepare an full analysis of the responses; publish a report of that analysis and invite comments on that analysis report. The strategy must be based on the audit findings and to be valid for a three year period. The strategy will be reviewed as necessary and any following strategies will also be for a three year period. As part of the consultation and audit process the voluntary sector on Anglesey are invited to contribute by sending any relevant information applicable to the services of their organisation, either statistical or anecdotal to the address below. To assist in this process, members may also use the questionnaire which is included with this issue. Yours faithfully
