Since completing a degree in physical education in 1996, she has worked in a variety of different sport and exercise environments with a wide range of target groups including people with disabilities.

There are many problems in disability sport which need to be addressed and Rachel hopes to overcome some of these problems to increase opportunities and participation at all levels amongst disabled people by creating and developing new / existing clubs.

The John Ellerman Foundation

The Foundation aims to support a broad cross - section of charities in the UK doing work of national significance in the following categories:

Medical and Disability, Arts, Conservation, Community development and
Social Welfare.

The Foundation is working towards making fewer but larger grants, and towards
developing partnerships with funded charities. The Foundation has an additional interest in supporting innovatory work, or co - operation between two or more charities.

The Foundation is aware that core funding is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain, and is open to receiving applications for this purpose. Charities that receive core funding are expected to account for its expenditure and identify what is has enabled them to do.

Potential applicants are asked to write initially with a brief description of the charity and its current need for funding. This letter should be no more than one or two pages of A4, and there is no need to send annual reports or background material at this stage.

Trustees will decide from this letter whether they want to invite a formal application, if so, an application form will be sent.

Letters should be sent to The Appeals Manager, The John Ellerman Foundation,
Aria House, 23 Craven Street, London. WC2N 5NS, or e-mail Eileen Terry,
Appeals Manager on:
The Foundation will also discuss potential applications by telephone on .

partnerships, which establish a community-based project.
There are three categories of grants:
" Process grants of up to £5,000 are available for activities such as feasibility studies or establishing partnerships.

A new European Funding Adviser in Colwyn Bay

I am Denni Turp, since late last year one of WCVA's new team of European
Funding Advisers, and I am based in Colwyn Bay but work across Anglesey, Conwy, Denbighshire and Gwynedd.

You might wonder what a European Funding Adviser is here for, and I would have to say that what I do is to a large extent dependent on what the local voluntary sector wants, on what you feel would be useful to help the sector access Objective 1 funding, though there is a range of services I can offer.

Last year, WCVA succeeded in a bid for European money to provide advice, support and training to the sector around Objective 1, and these activities will be the main focus of my work. There are, of course, other sources of Objective 1 support available to you locally - Medrwn Môn, whose hands are already very full providing a wide range of
support services, or through the local Objective 1 Partnership and the council's
European Officers. My only task is to help the voluntary sector with Objective 1, and I hope to do that by working in co-operation with Medrwn Môn.

In my last job, I worked in a similar capacity around both Objective 2 and Objective 3, and in my previous post, working for a voluntary sector training organisation, I had
responsibility for writing funding applications some of which were for European money, so you might expect, by now, that I would have some useful knowledge about
European funding! And WCVA itself has other things in the pipeline to help: by the middle of February the new Objective 1 website should be up and running as well as a new
telephone helpline.

In the near future I expect to be running free Objective 1 training sessions
locally, but in the meantime, you are welcome to contact me by
phone or e-mail with any Objective 1 ideas
or queries you might have.

Medrwn Môn Membership - We enclose a membership form kindly asking voluntary / community groups to consider affiliating with us - unless your group is already a member.

Although we serve and represent the whole sector we expect groups who use our services to consider being members. It is advantageous to us as an organisation when presenting statistics to report a good number of members.

Benllech Welsh Nursery School became the 200th group to officially affiliate to
Medrwn Môn - they are located in the Goronwy Owen Memorial Hall at Tynygongl, providing nursery experiences through the medium of Welsh. As it is a registered charity the nursery school is fully dependent on grant it receives.

Hear and Now - Menter Môn have, through the 'Translation in the Community' project, produced a booklet 'Hear and Now', in association with the Association of Welsh Translators and interpreters. When using a simultaneous translation service, the aim is for all to be able to communicate in Welsh and English without the speaker's language creating any problem. The success of a meeting depends greatly on the translator and on the equipment as well as on officers and other people. Therefore, the above booklet was produced with the aim of noting the different things users can do to ensure a successful bilingual meeting.

There are 2 booklets available and if you would like any further information about Simultaneous Translation, or copies of the booklets, please contact Sian on or through e-mail:
