Good Practice in Recruiting and Supporting of Voluntary Workers

In this day and age there is a great deal of competition between organisations to
recruit and keep voluntary workers. Its very important therefore that we adopt proper systems and policies that help us to appoint the most appropriate person to a particular job, and to maintain, support and evaluate our existing voluntary work-force.

The course covers methods of attracting voluntary workers, proper selection
procedures, work descriptions, equal opportunities, legal aspects of recruitment and providing on-going support and guidance.

Applications wanted for Nationwide Foundation

The Nationwide Foundation was set up in 1997 to improve the quality of life and the range of opportunities for those in need, promote social inclusion and achieve real and sustainable benefit to communities.

The foundation focuses on three main themes, volunteering, disadvantage and discrimination and quality of life. Under the theme of volunteering, the foundation focuses its support on projects which involve grass roots community action, with emphasis on the UK's most marginalised communities.

The foundation also supports activities that address disadvantage, discrimination or stigma. Its specific focus is to help disadvantaged people participate in decision-making processes that affect their lives and challenge the stigma associated with mental health.

The foundation seeks to promote and sustain the welfare of disadvantaged members of the community. The overall objective is to keep people healthy, independent and active in mind and body with a focus upon the quality of life and combating isolation in both urban and rural environments.

The foundation awards grants to the areas of special interest within the 12 regional areas which mirror the government's standard statistical regions.

Donations will range from £500 to £10,000 and are made on a one-off basis.
Applicants seeking longer term funding must seek advice from the foundation before submitting an application for support.

In 2000/01 the foundation donated a total of £142,701 to 21 organisations in Wales. They are looking to increase this amount and would welcome applications from Welsh organisations whose activities come under the above themes.

Local Mental Health Grants Scheme - £1m extra for voluntary sector in Wales.

Health Minister Jane Hutt said 'I am delighted to announce this boost for the
voluntary sector, tackling mental illness is one of the assembly's key priorities.
We have recently published two mental health strategies, one for children and
adolescents, the other for adults. Both of these depend heavily on the proper
involvement of the voluntary sector, and to be used to build capacity in this sector'
"In this way, voluntary groups will be able to play a full part in achieving strategic aims and helping to build mental health services in Wales that we can be proud of"

The money will be administered by the Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA). It is aimed particularly at those voluntary organisations unable to secure funding from existing grant schemes and whose aims are compatible with the strategies.

The Assembly is particularly keen to see this funding directed at smaller local
voluntary organisations, particularly those who have been unable to secure much funding in the past.

Volunteers Forum An excellent evening for volunteers was recently held at the Bull Hotel, Llangefni, where certificates and diaries were awarded to about 130 individuals to thank them for their service to the community.
