PLANET PLEDGE

People throughout Britain have been urged by eco campaigners at Going for Green to join in the Governments ‘Are you doing your bit’ campaign by making a pledge for the environment.
So far thousands of people have signed up to the Planet Pledge 2000 scheme and Keep Wales Tidy Campaign, who are co-ordinating the scheme in Wales, are on target towards meeting their goal of 50 000 pledges. At the Lampeter Urdd Eisteddfod leading politicians, TV stars and hundreds of youngsters made the pledge to make small Iifestyle changes.

The next major pledging session will take place at the Ynys Môn National Eisteddfod during the first week in August and to really boost the numbers they would welcome your support.

They are sure that you will be aware of people in your county who could spend a few hours on the Eisteddfod field explaining to people the benefits of recycling, turning lights off when leaving a room and saving water. These are some of the simple ways in which everyone could make a contribution towards a better future and they could endorse their commitments by signing a simple pledge.

The names of all those who have made a pledge will then be displayed at two or three major national sites in Wales during January 2000.

Should you require more information please get in touch with Wynne Williams, Keep Wales Tidy Campaign, Slate Quay, Caernarfon on .

CO-OPERATIVE PARTNERSHIPS

The Co-operative society’s community awards scheme, Co-operative Partnerships, launched in 1997 is this year working with Crime Concern and Victim Support, to target projects which address the social and economic conditions in which crime breeds, striving to develop a sense of collective responsibility in communities or working with people who have committed crimes but want to change their way of life. Projects may also focus on working with young people to make sure they have constructive ways to spend their leisure time; neighbourhood projects helping protect the vulnerable: providing a local contact point for them, or perhaps making the physical environment safer.

Julia Youd, the organiser of Co-operative Partnerships said "We’d encourage all groups working in any of these areas to get in touch as we may be able to offer our support. Ultimately we want to build links between people from different walks of life and different generations to make the communities in which we live safer and somewhere we can all take pride in".

To be eligible for a Co-operative Partnership award your project must be based or be operating in a community within five miles of a Co-operative food stores or ten miles of any of our other outlets.

Co-operative Partnerships,
Freepost 015573,

Applications must be returned by 31 August 1999. Groups will know in October/November whether they have been successful and the grants should be presented in December.

The PPP Healthcare Medical Trust

The PPP Healthcare Medical Trust, re-launched last year, is set to be one of the largest grant making charities in the UK with £17 million a year to disseminate when it becomes fully operational. This year it will have an income of around £1O.5million. The first grants programmes were launched in January, with two themed programmes, mid-career development awards for health care workers, and medical student awards. The themed programmes aim to support initiatives in research, training or service development that ‘address the incidence and impact of mental health and/or learning difficulties in childhood and adolescence" and "could defer or prevent the onset of disabling conditions or the need for long term care or acute hospitalisation among older people."

AGORIAD PROJECT

COMMUNITY DESIGN TRAINING DAYS

The Agoriad Project is arranging a series of training days for voluntary and community representatives looking for advice and training on building design issues for community design projects.

They have recently held similar training days for professional designers who are looking for community design training and advice. These proved very successful and therefore they have arranged similar days for voluntary and community organisations, including representatives from Community Voluntary Councils, Leader groups, The Prince’s Trust and other intermediary organisations. Ideally they would like to have at least one representative from your organisation present on the day.

The intention is to give training and advice about issues affecting community development and building design, which you will find of use in your work with local communities. The Agoriad training day will include sessions on Feasibility Studies and the Design & Building process.

It will be looking at what groups should expect from their designer, how to find the right professional help, what should be included within the feasibility process, and what happens after you’ve got the funding.

The training days will be held during October in three regional locations:

Greenmeadow Community Farm, Cwmbran, Friday 1 October
Carew Hall, Tenby, Tuesday 12 October
Canolfan Seion, Denbigh, Friday 22 October

If you would like to attend, please indicate which location you would like to attend, and send a payment for £10.00 to:

Voluntary Work and Incapacity Benefit

As of 5 October 1998 there was no limit on the amount of hours an individual in receipt of Incapacity Benefit could volunteer (previously the limit was 16 hours a week).

Despite the fact that engaging in voluntary work should not jeopardise entitlement to Incapacity Benefit there is evidence that claimants are experiencing difficulty.

For recipients of any state benefit, we as the local Volunteer Bureau, as good practice, enquire/advise that:

  • Make sure you know of any benefit volunteers receive and encourage volunteers to understand the impact of voluntary work on their benefit status.
  • Any voluntary work offered must be done for a not-for-profit organisation (for instance a registered charity or community group) or statutory body.
  • The volunteer should inform the local benefit agency of their intention to volunteer before they start volunteering and receive confirmation that they will be allowed to start without jeopardising their benefit.
  • All expenses should be declared and be a direct reimbursement for (receipted) costs incurred whilst volunteering.

If a prospective volunteer to your organisation is having difficulties with their Incapacity Benefit, please contact us for additional support.

Details of any cases where recipients of Incapacity Benefit have had their entitlement to IB removed or reassessed because of their participation in voluntary work, should either be passed on indirectly to us or directly to the National Association of Volunteer Bureaux (N.A.V.B.), who are actively lobbying Government.
