Welcome to the first edition o f the newsletter for voluntary and community organisations on Ynys Môn. Ynys Môn Voluntary Services will begin its work of supporting and developing the voluntary sector on 1 April 1997.

Following a successful public meeting on 30 September 1996 to establish Ynys Môn Voluntary Services, the following people were elected to the Steering Committee, which has met a number of times to complete the work necessary to present the grant application to the Wales Council for Voluntary Action from its Local Voluntary Services Scheme:

Ms Di Bushell (Chair) - Holyhead CAB
Mr Tony Pritchard (Vice Chair) - Access Môn
Mr John C Jones - Age Concern Gwynedd and Môn
Mrs Kath Dowgun - Anglesey Crossroads
Mrs Menna Thomas - Agoriad Cyf.
Mrs Myfanwy Pritchard - WRVS Gwynedd and Môn
Mrs Anne Convery - Anglesey PPA
Mrs Mair Davies - RSPCA
Mrs Cadi Evanson - Anglesey Volunteer Bureau
Mrs Alwena Lewis - Mudiad Ysgolion Meithrin Môn
Mr Alan Williams (Treasurer) - Holyhead Opportunities Trust

Subsequently WCVA announced that #65,159 was available to establish YMVS. An open meeting will be held in the spring/early summer to elect a management committee.

A further grant has been awarded from the European Regional Development Fund to employ a rural development worker for a 21 month period to encourage and support local people to co-operate as volunteers and as members of local voluntary organisations; to take action to identify and address local problems; to organise and initiate services and to set up and maintain self-help activities.

Ynys Môn County Council has warmly welcomed this exciting development and discussions are taking place on a number of matters, including financial support and the establishment of a voluntary sector resource centre.

John R Jones and Wendy Flynn, previously with Gwynedd Voluntary Services, have been appointed Principal Officer and Administrator and further staff appointments will be made shortly.

A questionnaire is enclosed regarding the services that YMVS will be offering the voluntary sector, and it would be appreciated if it could be returned to the address below.

To enable this new organisation to provide a strong voice for the voluntary sector and represent its views locally and nationally, please join us by contacting the address below.

One of the aims of Ynys Môn Voluntary Services is to work with other voluntary organisations who can use this newsletter to publicise their activities. We intend to work closely with Ynys Môn Volunteer Bureau, whose offices are at County Offices, Shire Hall, Glanhwfa Road, Llangefni, telephone . The aim of the Bureau is to promote opportunities for volunteers and create placements, the office is open Monday to Friday to discuss the needs of volunteers. The Bureau is looking for more volunteers, and you will be receiving a questionnaire shortly regarding their activities.

Please contact us if the contact address for your organisations is incorrect, or if you know of a voluntary organisation which needs further information. We will be developing a data base of voluntary activity on Ynys Môn.

Further information will follow, but in the meantime, if you want a chat or to meet, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
