David Chambers is best known on Anglesey for his finely detailed watercolour paintings of historic buildings.

Between 1992 & 1994, for example, he recorded on canvas every church on Anglesey, walking miles to locate the often overgrown, abandoned and almost untraceable buildings. " Finding and painting them was a fascinating experience I wouldn't have missed, as churches are a very important part of community heritage." These 92 churches on 10 frames are now in the permanent collection of Oriel Ynys Môn.

David has also completed a substantial collection of paintings of Anglesey's windmill's, watermills and country houses. "I enjoy walking and love the outdoors, so doing this kind of thing is absolutely perfect as far as I'm concerned."

David is a big fan of Turner whose draughtsmanship he admires. His own natural skills as a draughtsman have led him through his life into areas of study and work which have highly influenced his paintings. These have included a course in architectural drawing at Hamburg University, mapmaking as a surveyor for the Ordnance Survey, working as an articled pupil in a multi disciplined drawing office, a period as assistant town surveyor in Holyhead.

It is unsurprising that he describes each painting as being scrupulously diagrammatically correct. He paints from photographs he has taken and yet the paintings are not simply 'dry' duplications of the photographic images. They are not, as David says, "artistically correct", in that he subjectively creates the mood or atmosphere of a piece, working from memory and association and, perhaps, changing the season or time of day in order to add more of his own personal 'colour' to the painting.

David listens to classical music whilst he paints at home and in particular opera, which he is passionate about. He is also committed with a kind of passion to constant learning and study, making regular trips to the British Museum, from where he draws much inspiration.

David's work 'at large' in the community has included running a puppet company with his late wife from corporation buses in Manchester. His natural affinity with children has earned him high esteem from children, parents and teachers on the island as a result of his popular art workshops for children which are conducted in his highly personal, easygoing and empowering style. He is amused, rather than daunted, that his last workshop for Oriel Ynys Mªn drew 143 children.

David's choice of subject tends to be that which he does best. However he is open to what might come along; "I'll paint anything really." He is currently illustrating poetry, completing some garden paintings for a lecturer on gardens and a woodland painting for the Greenwood Centre.
