Alertbox
www.useit.com This is written by an engineer who works for Sun Microsystems, and has really thought-provoking articles on the how the Web medium should be deployed. Dynamic Net Inc www.pmpcs.com Peter Perchansky is a computing consultant specialising in Unix, but his site includes an excellent set of pages on MS FrontPage (the web-authoring package used by Menternet!). These are well worth visiting, because they answer many of the most obvious issues that come up during use of the program. Electronic Software Online Publishing www.elsop.com ELSOP is responsible for an impressive link-checker called Linkscan. The site also includes information on electronic commerce, Web authoring, and a selection of Internet humour. Refreshingly, the site doesn't go overboard on graphics, so it downloads fast. Internet.com www.internet.com This is the front page to a family of sites owned by the giant Mecklermedia Corporation, and devoted to a range of Internet subjects. Typical component sites are the Electronic Commerce Guide, Browser Watch (for the latest news in the world of browser development, and a list of virtually every browsers available), WebDeveloper (for technical issues related to website design), the excellent Search Engine Watch (for all the latest on how search engines work, and how to use them to find information and to publicise your site), and the magazine Internet World. The Internet product Watch site is especially useful, because it has lists of the latest software being produced for use on the Web. Internet.com should be your jumping-off point if you want to find out what is happening on the technical side of the Internet. Jerold Schulman Inc www.jsiinc.com For those wishing to get the inside information on WinNT, this is one of the best places on the Web. Jerold has put together an immense selection of hints and tips, which really do give a tremendous insight into the nooks and crannies of this OS. A zipped version of all this largesse is available for only $20 - a real bargain. The script which we use in Menternet to add new users to our system is based on one at Jerold's site, and we are very grateful to him for his advice on deploying it. Jerold also sells a wide range of utilities and tools for WinNT, all at very competitive prices - I can vouch for his prompt and efficient service. Jerold offers free support if your order is over $500. WinDrivers www.windrivers.com If you have been searching for an elusive Windows driver for any piece of computer equipment, look no further. A superb site, with a search engine which allows you to zero in on the one you need from a vast collection of drivers. There is also a page with hints and tips (although these are rather limited). WinNT Magazine www.winntmag.com The online version of the magazine only gives the contents of the most recent issues, but back-issues are there in full. There are a large number of articles on all aspects of WinNT, from beginners' issues to more arcane topics, along with a number of reviews of new hardware and software. Definitely one of the better NT resources. |
