THE WELSH LANGUAGE ON ANGLESEY |
|
The 1991 census revealed that there were 42,000 Welsh speakers on Anglesey, which is 61% of the population. However, the profile and status of the Welsh language is often secondary to English. National research by NOP revealed that 88% of the population felt that the Welsh language was something to be proud of and that 75% believed that it should have equal status with English. Research undertaken by Menter Iaith Môn showed that 84% of the people on Anglesey supported the use of Welsh in business and that 74% of Welsh speakers would be more likely to use a business if it offered a bilingual service. When asked if the Welsh language was an attraction 77% of visitors believed it was. |
